1. Is the FS36275 a primary or secondary fuel filter?

It is a primary fuel filter. It is installed at the very beginning of the fuel system (closest to the fuel tank). Its main job is to remove large chunks of dirt and separate water before the fuel reaches the secondary fuel filter (like the FF5052) and the high-pressure fuel pump.  

2. How often should I drain water from the FS36275?

Best Practice: Check and drain it daily during your pre-start machine inspection.

The Process: Loosen the valve at the bottom of the filter to let accumulated water drain out into a container until pure diesel fuel begins to flow, then tighten it back up.

3. Does the FS36275 come with a reusable clear bowl?

No. The filter comes as a standard sealed spin-on canister. However, depending on your machine setup, it is designed to accept an aftermarket or OEM clear plastic water-collection bowl at the bottom so you can visually check for water buildup without opening the drain.

4. What is the difference between the FS36275 and a standard fuel filter?

Standard Fuel Filter: Only traps solid particles (dirt, rust, soot).

FS36275 (Water Separator): Uses specialized hydrophobic media. This media forces water droplets suspended in the diesel fuel to bead up, grow heavy, and sink to the bottom of the filter, keeping water completely out of your engine injection system. 

5. Can I use a 20-micron filter instead of the 10-micron FS36275?

It is not recommended. The FS36275 is rated at 10 microns to meet modern global Tier 3 and Stage IIIA emission standards. Upgrading to a looser 20-micron filter will allow smaller, abrasive particles to pass through, which will quickly clog or damage your expensive secondary filter and fuel injectors.

6. What are the signs that water has bypassed this filter?

If the filter is saturated or the water bowl is full, water will enter the engine, causing:

White smoke coming from the exhaust.

Engine knocking or rough idling.

Sudden, severe damage to the fuel injector tips due to water vaporizing under high pressure.

7. How do I properly prime the fuel system after replacing the FS36275?

Because primary filters hold a large volume of fuel, introducing air will cause the engine to stall.

Install the new filter dry to avoid contamination.

Locate the manual priming pump cap (usually right above the filter housing head).

Unscrew the plunger and pump it repeatedly until you feel heavy resistance.

Lock the plunger back down and start the engine, letting it idle for a few minutes to clear any trapped micro-bubbles.
