Types of Transmission Oil
Automatic Transmission Fluid (Atf)
ATF is the most commonly used type. It is designed for vehicles with automatic transmissions and formulated to handle the high temperatures and varying pressures encountered in these gearboxes. ATF has properties that ensure smooth shifting and protect against wear.
Manual Transmission Fluid
Unlike ATF, manual transmission fluid is tailored for manual gearboxes. It's typically thicker and designed to more robustly coat gear components, providing the necessary lubrication and pressure for manual shifting mechanisms.
Continuously Variable Transmission (Cvt) Fluid
CVT systems, which offer a seamless transition through an infinite number of effective gear ratios, require a specialized fluid. CVT fluid is designed to provide the correct frictional properties to prevent belt slippage while ensuring durability and smooth operation.
Dual Clutch Transmission (Dct) Fluid

How to change Transmission Oil Step-by-step instructions
Before changing the oil
To avoid damaging the transmission, adhere strictly to the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. For example, never run the engine or tow the vehicle without any oil in the transmission.
Draining the oil
First, remove all underbody trims or covers as necessary.
Use the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan to drain the old oil from the transmission and collect it in a suitable container.
Removing the oil pan
Metal oil pans: Only the oil filter and sealing ring need replacing. Loosen the oil pan screws in the sequence specified by the vehicle manufacturer to avoid distorting the pan. Afterwards, remove the old filter and any residual oil from the pan and the permanent magnet.
Installing the oil pan
Use new screws to install the new or cleaned oil pan. If you are using a ZF Aftermarket oil change kit all the necessary screws are included. When tightening down, always observe the sequence and tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Installing the drain plug
Now install the new drain plug along with a new seal, paying attention to the specified tightening torque.
Filling ZF transmission oil
Be very careful when filling oil. Over- or underfilling or using oil at the wrong temperature can damage the transmission.
Running the engine
Let the engine run at idling speed and then select positions R and D one after the other. Afterwards, shift gears according to the table below, depending on the transmission variant (A, B or C).
Checking the oil temperature
Now check the oil temperature. It must be between 30°C and 35°C max. (6HP) or 40°C max. (8HP). Allow the engine to warm up or cool down to regulate the oil temperature.
Checking the fill level
Once the oil temperature is between 30°C and 35°C (6HP) or 40°C (8HP), check the fill level. If no oil is running out of the filler hole, the quantity of oil is too small.
Switching off the engine
You can switch off the engine now. The oil change is complete.

Application of Transmission Oil
Lubrication
Both ATF and MTF provide lubrication to the gears and other moving parts within the transmission.
Friction Control
ATF contains additives to control friction for smooth clutch engagement in automatic transmissions, while MTF provides high friction for the precise engagement of gears in manual transmissions.
Heat Transfer
Transmission fluid absorbs and removes heat generated by friction, helping to cool the transmission unit.
Torque Transfer
In automatic transmissions, ATF is also used to transmit power through the torque converter.
Wear Prevention
By creating a protective film, transmission fluid prevents wear and tear on internal transmission components.
