Components of Volvo Starter Motor 21632127 22602935
Starter Motor Housing
This is the outer casing and usually made from metal. The housing protects the different internal components from the effects of corrosive materials, impact and other forms of damage. In most types of the starter, the casing splits into two pieces held together by long bolts.
Starter Motor Field Coil/Magnet
The field coils are the electromagnets that provide the magnetic flux to turn the armature. They mount to the housing and consist of copper wires around magnetic cores or pole shoes. In some types of starters, permanent magnets are used instead of field coils.
Starter Motor Armature
Also known as the rotor, the armature is the part of starter motor that turns when the motor is in operation. It’s made up of these components: copper wire windings around a magnetic core, a commutator to conduct current to the coils, and a shaft to hold the parts as the armature rotates. The shaft ends in a bearing to smoothen rotation and a pinion drive gear in some starters.
Starter Motor Brushes
The starter brushes are arranged around the commutator and held in brush holders. They connect to the circuit that brings current to the motor. The brushes are responsible for transferring the current to the armature coils or rotor. They are usually made of carbon or graphite and prone to wear over time.
Starter Motor Bendix
This is the name given to the part that transfers the motor rotation to the flywheel ring gear. The starter Bendix primarily consists of a pinion gear and a method to push the gear toward the flywheel. In some starters, the Bendix uses inertia to engage with the flywheel. In a majority of starters today, the Bendix is a solenoid-operated mechanism. These starter types also include an over-running clutch to prevent the engine from driving the motor.
Starter Motor Solenoid
Also called the starter solenoid, this is the part used in newer starter types operate the Bendix drive. The solenoid also switches the starter motor circuit, connecting the motor and the battery directly. It’s one of the most important parts of the starter assembly. Inside the solenoid housing are several components. These include a set of coils (pull-in and hold-in coil), a plunger, and contacts.
Starter Motor Lever
The starter motor lever is the forked arm found in solenoid-operated starter motors. The lever moves the pinion drive to engage the flywheel, and back once the engine can run on its own. The solenoid is responsible for moving the fork back and forth during the engine starting session.

The motor contains an armature rotating inside a magnetic field. The armature shaft ends in a pinion and, in some types of the starter, a set of gears. When your turn on the ignition key of press the engine starting button, a current flows through the ignition circuit and activates the starter relay. The relay on the other hand, sends power to a part of starter motor called starter solenoid.
The starter motor solenoid acts as a large switch or relay and sends current from the battery directly to the motor. The solenoid also moves a lever, helping to push a pinion gear to mesh with the ring gear on the flywheel or flexplate. These two events happen almost concurrently. The motor then rotates the flywheel, turning the engine over and starting it.
When you release the ignition key, the ignition circuit stops sending current and the starter relay disconnects power to the starter solenoid. With the starter solenoid having no current flowing, it loses its magnetism and releases the plunger.
The plunger returns to its former position, disconnecting the motor circuit and pulling back the pinion drive gear from the flywheel or flex plate. At this time, the engine can run on its own.
Replacing Steps of Volvo Starter Motor 21632127 22602935
Starter Motor Replacement
If the starter motor itself is the culprit, replacement is often the most straightforward solution. Begin by disconnecting the battery to prevent electrical hazards. Then, remove the mounting bolts securing the starter to the engine block and disconnect the electrical connections. Install the new starter in reverse order and ensure all connections are tight.
Solenoid Repair
In some cases, the starter solenoid may be the source of the problem. If the solenoid is accessible and serviceable, you can attempt to repair it by cleaning or replacing the contacts. However, solenoid repair may require specialized tools and expertise, so proceed with caution.
Professional Assistance
If you're unsure about tackling starter repairs yourself, or if the issue persists after attempting DIY repairs, it's best to seek professional assistance. Certified Volvo technicians have the expertise and diagnostic tools to accurately diagnose and repair starter issues, ensuring your vehicle's reliability and safety.
Installation Steps

Safety First
Ensure that your vehicle is parked on a flat, level surface and the engine is turned off.
Engage the parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving.
Prepare the Vehicle
Prepare the tools and materials you'll need for the installation, which may include wrenches, pliers, a funnel, power steering fluid, and safety goggles.
Locate the Existing Oil Tank
Identify the current power steering oil tank in your vehicle. It is typically located near the engine, close to the power steering pump.
Drain the Old Fluid
Place a drain pan or container underneath the existing oil tank.
Use a wrench to loosen and remove the oil tank's drain plug or hose, allowing the old fluid to drain completely into the container.
Remove the Old Tank
Carefully disconnect any hoses or lines attached to the old tank.
Use appropriate tools to remove any mounting brackets securing the tank to the vehicle.
Gently remove the old power steering oil tank from its position.
Prepare the New Oil Tank
Examine the new power steering oil tank to ensure it is the correct size and design for your vehicle.
If necessary, transfer any fittings or connectors from the old tank to the new one.
Attach the New Tank
Position the new power steering oil tank in the same location where the old tank was removed.
Secure the tank in place using the appropriate mounting brackets and fasteners. Tighten them securely but avoid over-tightening.
Connect Hoses and Lines
Reattach any hoses or lines that were disconnected from the old tank to the corresponding connections on the new tank.
Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
Fill with Fluid
Using a funnel, add the recommended type and amount of power steering fluid to the new tank. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific fluid requirements.
Bleed the System
Start the vehicle's engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times.
This will help remove air from the power steering system. Check the fluid level and add more if necessary.

Disassembly tips of Volvo Starter Motor 21632127 22602935
Remove battery negative terminal Remove engine top cover.
Loosen air box cover (torx, they are captive), remove MAF (two torx screws) from the air duct, undo worm drive on air duct and remove airbox cover and filter.
Push prong fixing in bottom of the airbox with an 8mm socket and simultaneously lift bottom of air box free. Leave wires attached if you want and hang against wing/fender Undo 2 no. nuts holding starter cable bracket onto starter motor.
Undo 3 no. bolts holding starter to bell housing (2 no. bolts/studs, and a single bolt at the top (the forward one of the two black headed bolts).
Remove intercooler air duct (worm drive at one end and spring clips at the other). Gently lever out the two spring clips with two screwdrivers simultaneously. Stuff lower opening with a clean rag to stop bits falling in once hose removed.
Undo fourth bolt holding starter on place (underneath, at the arse end). Use 8mm spanner. Torch and mirror may be needed, as well as tiny fingers.
Wiggle the starter free and remove tie holding a cable to the starter. Remove the two connections to the solenoid. Carefully manoeuvre the starter free.

Listen for clicking sounds when turning the key or pressing the ignition button. If you hear a rapid clicking noise, then it will indicate several faults with the motor. Call a mechanic as soon as possible.
Check the car battery. This can lead to many faults, so ensuring that it is in complete working order is important for all drivers.
Test connections and sensors. There are many electrical wires and sensors in and around the engine and starter motor. They all need to be working for the starter motor to do its job.
