What this valve does on an X5000
The relay valve sits on the rear of the chassis, close to the rear brake chambers, and acts as a local air amplifier for the rear circuit.
When the driver presses the foot brake, the signal travels down a small control line to port 4 of the valve. Instead of feeding the rear chambers through that long line, the relay valve opens its own supply from the rear reservoir at port 1 and fills the chambers through the short delivery lines at port 2. On a 6×4 or 8×4 wheelbase this removes most of the brake lag between the front and rear axles, and it lets the rear chambers exhaust quickly when the pedal is released.
A worn valve rarely fails outright. It usually starts as a slow leak at the exhaust port, an audible hiss with the pedal held, or a rear axle that drags after release - all of which show up as uneven pad wear long before a workshop calls it a brake fault.

Fitting notes from our workshop
Before Removal
Completely drain the rear reservoir and chock the wheels. Label the control lines before disconnecting them - ports 4 and 1 appear similar once the valve is removed from the bracket, and reversing them will keep the rear brakes applied.
During Fitting
Clean the fitting threads and apply fresh sealant. Avoid over-tightening the aluminum body; a snug fit plus a quarter turn is sufficient for the air fittings. Position the exhaust port downward to prevent water accumulation.
After Fitting
Pressurize the system fully, hold the pedal down, and use a soap solution to check for leaks at every port and the exhaust. Then verify that the rear chambers release completely, and perform a road test to ensure balanced braking between front and rear.

Q: What is the difference between a relay valve and a quick release valve?
A: A quick release valve only speeds up the exhaust - it dumps air from the chambers locally instead of sending it back to the foot valve. A relay valve does that too, but it also has its own supply from the reservoir, so it fills the chambers as well as empties them. On a long wheelbase the relay valve is what removes brake lag; the quick release valve alone will not.
Q: Can I fit this valve to an X3000 or F3000?
A: Not without checking. The body looks the same across the series but the port layout and the control signal differ. Send us the number on your old valve or the chassis plate and we will quote the correct variant instead of guessing.
