DOT 3 brake fluid is a non-silicone, glycol-ether (polyalkylene glycol ether) based synthetic hydraulic fluid used in automotive and industrial hydraulic brake and clutch systems.
It is the entry-level performance grade defined by the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS No. 116, later harmonized with SAE J1703 and ISO 4925 Class 3.
Its job is to transmit pedal force with minimal compressibility to slow down or stop a vehicle, lubricate moving components, protect metals from corrosion, and stay stable across a wide temperature range.
DOT 3 is hygroscopic - it absorbs moisture from the air over time, which gradually lowers its boiling point and is why it must be replaced periodically
