China's heavy-duty trucks have promising overseas prospects
Over the past two years, as domestic heavy-duty trucks have entered the established market, China's heavy-duty truck exports have intensified. The heavy-duty truck export market is experiencing a surge, an indisputable fact. In 2022, China's heavy-duty truck exports exceeded 180,000 units, setting a new record and offering hope to domestic companies facing severe internal competition. From January to June of this year, cumulative export sales of Chinese heavy-duty trucks reached 157,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 111.8%, marking another significant step forward in sales. Chinese heavy-duty truck brands have experienced varying market performance in different regions of the world, broadly categorized as fast-growing, largest, stable, and future-development areas.
Before 2022, China's export sales to Europe (excluding Russia) remained around 1,000 units. In 2022, sales surged to 14,222 units, a nearly 11.8-fold year-on-year increase.
This growth trend has continued into 2023. In the first half of this year, China's heavy-duty truck exports to Europe (excluding Russia) reached 13,172 units, a year-on-year increase of approximately 4.6-fold, and full-year export volumes are expected to reach a new high. Following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, demand for Chinese-branded heavy-duty trucks in Russia has intensified due to geopolitical and international relations.
Facing market opportunities, Chinese trucks have rapidly entered the local market. In 2022, China exported 32,147 heavy-duty trucks to Russia, making it the destination to which China exported the most heavy-duty trucks that year.
In 2022, China exported 66,540 heavy-duty trucks to Asia, accounting for 37% of China's total heavy-duty truck exports. In the first half of this year, China sold 46,000 heavy-duty trucks to Asian countries, a year-on-year increase of 40.3%, accounting for 18.2% of the local market share.
In 2022, China sold 1,638 heavy-duty trucks to Oceania. Given the early stages of market development, despite the relatively small overall market size in this region, Chinese trucks also hold a small market share. Looking back, they can identify market breakthroughs to gain market share.
Chinese heavy-duty truck companies have also made active efforts to expand into overseas markets, not only through exporting complete vehicles but also by strengthening connections and cooperation with local markets through overseas factories and enhanced channel development.
At the same time, in their overseas market expansion, Chinese heavy-duty truck companies have continuously improved their after-sales service systems to provide local users with better service experiences and solutions. These efforts have not only increased the visibility and influence of Chinese heavy-duty truck companies in overseas markets, but also established a good reputation and credibility for them in local markets.
