DOT 4 brake fluid is a high-performance, polyglycol-ether and borate-ester-based synthetic hydraulic fluid engineered for modern automotive braking systems. It serves as the standard operational fluid for most passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and motorcycles built since the mid-2000s.

High Boiling Point
DOT 4 has a minimum dry boiling point of 230°C and a wet boiling point of 155°C. This resists vaporization and prevents dangerous brake fade under heavy loads or aggressive driving.
Hygroscopic Nature
The fluid readily absorbs moisture from the air over time. While it manages water better than DOT 3, this absorption eventually lowers the boiling point, necessitating regular replacement every 2–3 years.
dOT 4 Brake Fluid Maintenance Tips
1. Match the spec first
Only use DOT 4 if the reservoir cap / owner's manual says DOT 4 (or "FMVSS 116 DOT 4", "ISO 4925 Class 4", "SAE J1704").
If the car specifies DOT 4, you may top up with DOT 3 or DOT 5.1 (both glycol-based) in emergency, but a full flush to pure DOT 4 is preferred.
Never mix with silicone DOT 5, ATF, mineral oil, clutch oil (unless shared system), gasoline or water - it gels, swells seals or kills braking.
2, DOT4 eats paint - wipe immediately
DOT 4 is a strong solvent on automotive paint, plastic trim and some coatings.
Any spill: flush with plenty of water at once, do not rub. Rubbing spreads the damage and strips clearcoat.
Keep a water-damp cloth handy when opening the reservoir.
3, Hygroscopic = sealed or wasted
DOT 4 pulls moisture from air fast. Open canister left uncapped overnight is already degraded.
Rules:
Use from sealed, unopened container; reseal the canister with original cap immediately after pouring.
Do not reuse drained fluid or half-used can older than ~12 months (even if sealed, moisture creeps in via breather taps).
For export/warehouse: keep drums/cans upright, lid tight, silica-gel not needed but dry storeroom yes.
4, Change interval & how to judge
Standard: every 2 years or 40,000 km, whichever comes first.
Shorten to 1.5 years / 30,000 km in humid climate, mountain driving, towing, track use, or frequent ABS activation.
Test don't guess: moisture tester or test strips - replace if moisture ≥ 3% or dry boiling point drops near wet spec (155 °C).
Visual cue: fresh DOT 4 is clear pale amber; dark brown/black = oxidized, change now.
